Companies House name checker

The official Companies House search shows you names that look similar. This one tells you whether yours would actually be accepted, and why not if it wouldn’t.

Used to work out your trademark classes — the more specific, the better the screen.

Domains that must be available (optional)

If you pick any, the domain check only clears when every one of them is free — a taken one counts as a conflict.

Live register

A local copy of the full Companies House data for fuzzy matching, verified live against the Companies House API so a company registered yesterday still shows.

Sensitive words

Words like “bank”, “royal”, “institute” or “chartered” that need permission from a named body before the registrar will accept them, with the guidance for each.

Explained verdicts

Every conflict names the company, its number and status, and the rule it was caught by, so you know whether to rename or just tweak.

Why the official search isn’t enough

The company search on the Companies House website is a text search. It will list names that contain the words you typed, but it does not apply the same-as rules the registrar uses when you actually file, it does not flag too-like names, and it says nothing about sensitive words or the statutory format rules. Founders regularly find a name looks clear in the search and then have the incorporation rejected.

This checker applies the rules from the Company, Limited Liability Partnership and Business Names Regulations to your name and the register together, so the answer you get is the answer the registrar would give.

What gets a name rejected

  • Same as an existing name once punctuation, disregarded words and legal endings are stripped.
  • A sensitive word without the required approval letter. The full list is longer than most people expect.
  • Format problems: characters outside the permitted set, more than 160 characters, or a name that opens with a symbol.
  • Suggesting a connection with government or a public authority.

And what it won’t catch

Companies House does not check trademarks. Passing a name here is the start of clearance, not the end. The same form counts similar live marks in your trademark classes, and the full report screens them. Company name vs trademark explains why the two registers disagree so often.

NameVetted is a pre-screening tool, not legal advice. For anything high-stakes, confirm with a qualified trademark attorney.

Frequently asked questions

Is this connected to Companies House?

No. NameVetted is an independent tool that uses Companies House public data under the Open Government Licence and applies the published naming rules to it. Incorporation is still done with Companies House or a formation agent.

How up to date is the register you check?

A full copy of the register is refreshed monthly for fuzzy matching, and every check is also verified live against the Companies House API, so very recent incorporations are included.

Why did my name pass here but a formation agent rejected it?

Usually a sensitive word or a “too like” objection the agent is being cautious about. The check shows both, with the rule and the conflicting company, so you can see what they saw.
